Dsm: attempts to group together disorders with similar sets of symptoms with the assumption that similarity suggests a common cause similarly treated! New info leads to changes to diagnosis and a new version is released. Models of psychopathology: dsm doesn"t provide treatment plans for disorders; only describes a pattern of symptoms. Conflict may be due to unresolved childhood issues. Treatment must focus on psychological therapy to cope with underlying stressors (drugs only temporarily alleviate symptoms) Current popular therapies focus on personal insight to help patients understand themselves so they can cope better with stressors. *** both medical and psychodynamic models agree that mental disorder is an internal problem; behaviors seen on outside are merely symptoms of an internal problem (e. g. fever as sign of infection: behavioral model.
