PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Neuropeptide Y, Glycogen, Blood Sugar
Document Summary
Fasting feel hungry due to low blood glucose levels. Glucose: keeps body functions operating and is the preferred source of energy for the brain: brain cannot use fat energy stores for fuel regulating glucose availability is a top priority. Body stores glucose in the form of glycogen that can be released in between meals insulin: allows you to have time to do other things, rather than constantly consuming food to maintain glucose demand. Some glycogen is stored in muscles, but main supply is in the liver where it can be readily converted into glucose when your circulating blood glucose levels are low. Glucose-glycogen balance mediated by liver and pancreatic hormone . High levels of npy activity in the hypothalamus- increased appetite with and food seeking behaviours. Affects feeding behaviour similarly in fish, reptiles, birds and other non- human mammals. Liver sends signals to brain that trigger satiety in addition to hunger.
