Dualist framework; believed that the mind was separate from our biological body. The brain was a connection between mind and body. The pineal gland in the brain was the seat of the soul (the soul influenced the brain through this place) Receptive zone to receive signals from other neurons (dendrites) Transmission zone to pass signals onto other cells (neurons and terminal ends) Provide structural support, nourishment, and insulation for the neurons. Typical neuron starts off at -70mv relative to outside of the cell. Large negative protein molecules are large so they remain inside the cell. Most of the potassium ions stay inside the neuron. Leaky potassium channel is important to maintaining the resting potential of the neuron (allows freedom to potassium ions) Most chloride ions are outside of the cell (electrostatic forces of negative proteins keep chloride ions out) Most sodium ions remain on the outside of the cell.
