PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture 3: Neuroscience One ( web module + lecture notes)
Document Summary
Mind was seen as a separate entity, acting outside our biology , yet in control of our actions and thoughts. Physical brain was a connection between mind and body. Organized to send signals down synaptic pathways. Cell body- contains most of the vital organelles that keep the cell functioning. Dendrites- receive signals, relay the through the dendritic brand to be received by the cell body , where some signals will be conveyed down the axon. Axons vary in length- can be up to one metre ( spine to bottom of feet) Terminal end- reach out and make connections with the receptive zone of nearby neurons to transmit the signal. Glial cells- support, nourish, and provide insulation for neurons. The cell membrane is selectively permeable - allowing different ions to pass through with different levels of ease. Cell membrane also has protein channels( passageway for ions)- like the potassium and sodium channels.
