PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Stupor, Avolition, Dsm-5
Document Summary
When coping with challenges in life, it becomes difficult. Clinicians use the "four d"s" to broadly define abnormality. Not all four need to be present to be classified as having a psychopathology. Also presence of one or two does not necessarily mean there is psychological disorder is present. Distress refers to negative feelings related to thoughts and behaviour. Psychological disorders often, but not always, cause strong feelings of distress. Psychological disorders often cause dysfunction in completing everyday tasks, but this dysfunction may also be voluntary. Danger refers to the safety risk associated with thoughts and behaviour. Psychological disorders often, but not always, cause a person to place themselves or others in danger. The dsm is a standard diagnostic tool used to categorize and describe mental disorders so clinicians can diagnose their patients. Also allows researchers to talk about mental disorders using a common language. Dsm-5 began shift from categorical classification model to a dimensional classification model.
