Document Summary

Colour exists as our way of interpreting light waves. Colour adds to richness of our visual experience. Colour has a purpose beyond adding richness to aesthetics. Unit 2: evolution of colour vision - why and who. Primates are the only mammals that see in colour. The functions of colour vision in different species. Primates benefit from colour vision when foraging for food. Primates have three types of cones in the eyes that are used for colour vision. Advantage is the added contrast between objects and their background. Many non-mammalian species can see colours we don"t see including colours at the uv end of the spectrum. Colour vision is critical for mate selection in birds. For birds, the colour of a potential mate s feathers indicates how healthy they are while still remaining inconspicuous from predators who are unable to see bright colouration. Colour vision can also be used for foraging in non mammals.
