PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Neuroimaging, Lateral Sulcus, Stimulus Modality
Document Summary
The medulla is a region in the hindbrain which can be further divided into several sub regions; rostral ventral medial medulla. Behaviours may differ according to the messages delivered by neurotransmitters. Special techniques exist for studying the structure and function of the brain. Most invasive research (about the nervous system) is not done with humans, but rather, with animals, tissues or more reduced preparations. Brain injury links brain anatomy with behavioural deficits: ex. Phineas gage (1848) was a railway construction crew, in charge of using explosives to remove large sections of rock from the path of the railroad. Gage was well respected by his crew and a very likeable fellow. On a fateful day, gage was the victim of a tragic accident, resulting in the blasting of a 3 foot iron rod completely through his left cheekbone and through the top of his skull. Gage survived, but with some loss of vision and facial disfigurement.
