Memory does not function as seamlessly as metaphors. Frederic barlett realized problems with these metaphors. Hermann ebbinghaus define memory as a serial learning task. Info first stored in short-term buffer, important info can be transferred to long-term memory system for more permanent storage: like temporary files vs stored files on a computer. George miller: most people can remember 7 +/- 2 numbers in short-term memory, into can re-organize into chunks of meaningful packets, expanding capacity of short-term memory. Memory performance is often best for items that are at beginning and end of a list.
