Norman triplett 1898 cyclists raced faster when competing against each other compared to individual time trials: hypothesized presence of others influence performance, social facilitation increased performance that occurs in presence of co-actors or audience. Co-actors another individual performing the same task. Audience group of people watching an individual perform a task: exceptions sometimes presence of co-actors and audience will have no effect, or will hinder the performance. Robert zajonc 1965 presence of others increases arousal: simple/well-practiced tasks, performance is enhanced, complex/unpracticed tasks, performance hindered. Bobo doll experiment (albert bandura) adult model aggressive or passive play, children 3-6 modeled behavior with no explicit reinforcement: follow-up experiment with real person instead of bobo doll acted the same. 1930 muzafer sherif if light has moved in dark room: after discussing with other people, response will slowly converge with others norm formation, follow-up: confederate on fear of rejection.
