When irrelevant info overwhelms us, we get distracted as it can make it difficult to identify relevant to our goals and attend to important info. Automatic processes capture their attention and are triggered by external events. Controlled processes guide attention voluntarily and consciously to objects of interest; requires more cognitive effort. Multi-tasking demands for attention increase so you must make adjustments to. Salient info captures our attention automatically more noticeable cues lead to stronger and quicker association when paired with events. A salient piece of info is one that appears to naturally pop out at you. Hard to miss loud sounds/flashing of an emergency vehicle. Consciously effortful tasks can become automatic through practice.
