2 module 1: research methods in psychology 1. Goal of scientist is to discover new info to understand how world works. Making observations or conducting experiments in a lab. Carefully considering how to analyze data and produce accurate results. Scientists often use existing information of the world to better supplement research: Helps construct a theory about how world works --> hypothesis --> makes a specific prediction about variables involved in theory. Theory: collect a general set of ideas about the way the world works. Hypothesis: form a testable statement guided by theories that make specific predictions about the relationships between variables. Research method: determine the way in which the hypothesis will be tested. Collect data: take measurements of the outcomes of the test. Analyze data: understand the data and discover trends or relationships between the variables. Difficult and time consuming --> rigorous review process --> must be interesting to community--> science is dynamic.
