Document Summary

These questions come to mind under extraordinary times of violence, death, and madness that comes with war. In war crimes trials, the accused often tried to excuse their actions by saying they were only following orders. These arguments can be rejected on the grounds that an individual should always resist orders that violate ethical or moral standards of human rights. Milgram found that 65% of all subjects continued to the very end of the experiment, deli(cid:448)eri(cid:374)g a sho(cid:272)k la(cid:271)elled (cid:862)da(cid:374)ger, high voltage(cid:863) to a (cid:374)o(cid:374)-responsive man with a heart condition. When milgram described the experiment to psychiatrists and everyday people, almost nobody predicted they would continue to the end. There is a very strong tendency of obedience to authority, even if this power is limited. The experiment illustrates that you are not always an accurate judge of how you would behave in a given situation.
