Cognitive psychologists study how our mental processes make us sentient beings. Memory metaphors are misleading because they simplify memory as perfectly stored and easily retrieved. With memory metaphors stored data us identical to inputted information. When in fact, stored memory includes personal details and interpretations. With memory metaphors retrieving data is identical to inputted data. When in fact, retrieved memory may be altered or lost. Psychologists study how memory is acquired, encoded, stored, and retrieved. One memory can act as a cue to signal another memory into consciousness. Early work on memory noted how each memory cue is linked to the cue before it. Hermann ebbinghaus: defined memory as a serial learning task. The retrieval phase uses either a recall and recognition test for memory. Recall test: a subject is asked to freely generate as many items as they can remember.
