Document Summary

Without attention you cannot do much in life. But when driving through busy traffic becomes more difficult as you engage in an important call on your cell phone. Automatic processes: involuntary capture , fast and efficient. Controlled processes: conscious attention, slow and effortless. While driving we consciously choose to pay attention to many aspects of the environment to guide the goal directed behaviours. Flexible controlled processes involved in conscious attention as you choose to when to make lane changes, speed slow down. Shows it"s difficult to consciously attend to many aspects of the task environment at the same time because the resources for controlled process are limited. Listening to radio and talking on the cell phone consume some of these resources, and so as the demands for attention increase you must make adjustments to compensate or else performance in all task suffers.
