Basic is the most abstract level at which objects have similar shapes. Children use this method to categorize (base categorization on the shape of something. Bird experts took a little longer than dog experts. Identify specific species bird has hard time making judgement. A concept is represented by a prototypical item which has central tendency. Our minds have a specific prototype for a category. A new example is analyzed to see if it looks similar to the prototype in our mind. Typicality effect shows a graded structure to classification. Prototypes can be directly formed through instruction or indirectly through inductive learning. We can form prototypes quickly and without explanation. Categorization inclusion as (cid:862)old(cid:863) depends on pattern type.
