Instrumental: involves elicit training b/n voluntary behaviours & their consequences. The learning of a contingency b/n behaviour & consequence. Examples: if you touch a hot stove, you will get burnt; if you misbehave in kindergarten, you will have a time out. Cat was placed in the puzzle box, w a rope hanging down that opened the door to food, as. Thorndike observed their behaviours & recorded their escape time. The puzzle box (would cats" escape time from the puzzle box decline over successive trials?) At first, the cat would engage in random behaviour as they tried to escape; as the animal struggled, they would eventually come to the solution of pulling on the rope by accident. Thorndike hypothesized that in following trials after discovery of correct solution, the cat would immediately escape when placed in the same puzzle box (pattern would look like the graph)
