PSYCH 1F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Korean Language, Phoneme, Language Production
Document Summary
Most psychologists consider only human communication to be language. Language is regular; meaning that it is governed by rules & grammar. Sentence can be reorganized & still maintain its meaning bc a system of rules details how each word fits w ones around it. What specific sound (word) is assigned to represent a concept is completely random (arbitrary) ie. the sound of the word cat does not indicate that it refers to furry animal w whiskers & a tail. Explains why language is so important to the human experience. We use language to communicate w others, but we also use language to form our thoughts. When thinking to yourself, you run through a private dialog in your native language. Researchers have proposed that language may influence how we perceive & experience the world; known as the whorf- sapir hypothesis. Question that is unresolved: can you have abstract thought w out language.
