POLSCI 2O06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Military Alliance
Document Summary
Aristotle lays out: why we need to look at political life at all. Teleological claim on human nature: particular set of ends, what we naturally gravitate towards. Example: when an acorn becomes an oak tree it realizes its potential in becoming the full oak tree: therefore, humans have their own existing capacities, fulfill ourselves as the human beings that we are (cid:1) Relationship between ruler and ruled (easiest way to comprehend) Beneficial for both who should rule and how should be ruled: example: parents and children. How this concept works with things that are equal: easy to see how unequal"s are ruled and rule (cid:1) Plato is critical in divisions of wealth. Make city unified and singular (right direction) Undermines political association: different/diverse interest, skills and aims, need diversity in order to make the city work, example: military alliance (one main goal) Everybody doing the same thing: not good for the political association.
