POLSCI 2O06 Lecture 2: Lecture 2 - Natural Right and Private Property
Document Summary
Lecture #2 - natural right and private property. Locke wants us to see that we are driven to preserve ourselves. Hobbes thinks that we are so vicious and insecure. Hobbes believes that is better than one king wanting to kill you rather than a whole group of people wanting to kill you. It is not the total state of anarchy that hobbes sees. Reason allows us to see that we need to engage in a certain way to preserve ourselves (locke) If you steal someone"s goat, they are going to come and steal your donkey. The best way to preserve live, is to leave people alone and don"t mess with their belongings. Locke"s idea of the state of nature is humans living together will common reason, but not with common authority. Different views of the state of nature gives a different view of legitimate political power. Locke has a very different view of what natural rights we have.
