Document Summary

Lecture #1 - locke and the social contract. Helps to build up the social contract theory. Picture us in a pre-social state (the state of nature) Imagine what people would be like without living under the conventions we have implemented on ourselves via political institutions. Gives us a choice to be involved in political institutions. This then results in political power being legitimate: consent. The social contract is the beginning of this point. What makes it legitimate and something that we want to be listened too. No one can clearly demonstrate that they are descendants of adam. The nature of political power is not paternal, there is no natural relations. Where there is a natural rule in children and parental. You and i do not have the right to harm each other or ourselves. God and yourself own your body and self. No one else can have the right to the body you own.
