Overview/ chronology of the criminal justice system: conduct/activity deemed/defined as criminal, conduct/ activity committed, conduct reported - police investigate, charges laid, first appearance (bail/ recognizance, preliminary hearing, trial, sentencing, punishment, post-punishment. Prevent crime and promote respect for the law; Different from deterrence; more like an armed force. Conduct that we don"t accept as a gov"t. Specific deterrence: to deter people as individuals from undertaking activities repeatedly. Stopping an inderage kid from smoking pot. General deterrence: charging a groups of people that rob banks and are a gang. Stopping them, showing the public to not to as them. We should only incarcerate ppl, when they continue and repeatedly show that they are in fact a danger to society. Compensation that must be given to the victim. Harm done to society (buildings, mass amount of people) Utilitarian: future conduct of individual and community (conservatives) Amoral consideration, to make sure that society function in the most efficient way.
