Models of policing community policing: community policing, 1970s to present. Creates an understanding of the community for the police officer. Not just crime control, public safety and resource. Need more stations. no evidence to say that it reduced crime. Perception that communities were safer however, no real evidence: outcome based- didn"t focus on real reasons that there was crime. Focused on number of arrests and not much else: focuses on at risk communities- not done across the board. More police to discover crime, therefore more arrests: conflicting roles- peacekeepers but they also have to charge people. Couldn"t gain trust to find the underlying problems. Discretion: lack of full implementation- viewed as a failure. Models of policing paramilitary police: paramilitary policing, 1970s to present- conflict between two different policing models. Federal government"s interest in police having enough weapons to protect. Huge grants for military armaments. operate under state authority.
