Review of what we"ve talked about so far (last week, missed lecture): If you ask an idealist" why the international relations environment looks the way it does; international institutions that we have are undeveloped and do not provide mechanisms where states can work with each other to resolve conflicts. States can only depend on themselves when it comes to their core interests and needs for survival" and security; there is always a concern about being dominated by other states. Dominated over vs dominated by; states exerting power over other states is the only way they can feel secure. As far as collective security is concerned, the reasoning behind it is subject to numerous flaws that make its realization unrealistic (according to realists). It will only work if a number of conditions are met. For it to work, certain things have to be true:
