Political and social life makes us think about the world as being separated into distinct geopolitical units. The state itself is still just an institution - in some instances, it may be dominant and in some it may be recessive. The state has a long history which we should learn more about. Various social and political processes exist outside of the state borders (economic production can be multinational, with physical and intellectual components coming from different regions) Things like global warming have planet-wide effects and planet-wide causes - we can"t get a handle on this issue solely by looking through the prism of the state. The national economy is not the only way of looking at economics. We must consider which was of spatializing the world will give us the best handle on social and political life. According to dickerson and flanagan: a state is defined by the joint presence of three factors: population, territory, and sovereignty.
