PNB 3RM3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 38: Observational Error
Document Summary
Numerator is what is interesting to you want this to be bigger than the denominator, which is the randomness in the world. All cases: is the affect, and your hoping there is a difference over some variability. You want your numerator to be as big as possible. Anova: for when there are more than 2 groups. Looks at total variability between individuals, variability within groups and variability between groups. Compares the between group variability to the within group variability. Between: how different are the means (variation due to independent variable) Within: how much spread is in the population? : (random error) Is the deviation from the grand mean larger than the deviation we see within the groups. Why between vs. within? (aka group vs. error) This average squared differences is what mean squares represents. When computing differences from a grand mean, the average of these differences will always be 0.
