Overview of today"s lecture: summary of rousseau"s account of human nature, perfectibility and freedom, the human good, the problem of inequality of power and wealth, the social contract as remedy. Rousseaus account of human nature: based on three main things: goods (human goods) Satisfaction of some desires = well being. Realization of various higher capacities: they are realization of the capacities below but also realisation of capacities for art, complex social relationships, etc, capacities. Freedom: two types: (1) metaphysical freedom vs. (2) non domination freedom, metaphysical: In relation to, but different than perfectibility: pg 53: nature commands every animal the laws of mechanics explains nothing . Natural pity needs and desires: basic needs. What we would found if we were in the son. Ex: satisfaction of hunger, thirst, sexual appetites: perfectibility-generated needs. Generated by leisure, division of labor, perfectibility, etc. Needs we are able to generate given we have leisure time.
