Document Summary

Value: what is the good? (jeremy bentham, robert nozick) A lot of time in this course will be dedicated to answering the question what is the good . We will ask what has value , then say because this has value, what should follow, what will therefore count as the right thing to do in terms of what counts as the good. We"re going to examine the points that pleasure, and happiness count as the good. We"re going to look at a critique of this. Some theories will run these together more closely than. There"s a difference between the good and the right others, but they don"t necessarily amount to the same thing. Difference between intrinsic values and instrumental values is that intrinsic values are valuable in themselves, instrumental values are only good because they lead to other goods. A subjective theory of value will say that whether something is valuable will depend on the person and what they like.
