Document Summary

Egoism as the beginning of morality-thomas hobbes (pg 69) Psychological egoism-the descriptive theory of our nature, we always act in our own self- interests. Ethical egoism-each person ought to pursue their self-interests exclusively, we only have duties to ourselves. Hobbes is a psychological egoist, but that is debated, uncharitable. All men are equal in the state of nature in body and mind, even if some are more advantaged physically or intellectually, they will still manage to balance out. Limited altruism: we help others because are also looking for benefits out of them. Practical rationality: to attain one"s ends may have conflict with another in which they become enemies. This will result in a person trying to group up people that have the same means as them to protect against the enemy. State of nature: right to all things , compete over scarce resources, cooperation impossible, no security.
