Locke says we only have a loose aggregate of bodies. 2 ideas of substance: 1) type of composition and 2) substratum. More material notion of substances this notion alone does not do enough: where that unity is actually coming from is still unclear (hence the second definition) second idea of substance: If there were no substances underlying these qualities, then we would only have access to secondary qualities of both bodies and mind. Locke: while i know, by seeing or hearing, etc. , that there is some corporeal being without me, the object of sensation, i do more certainly know that there is some spiritual being within me that sees and hears. This, i must be convinced, cannot be the action of bare insensible matter, nor ever could be without an immaterial thinking being. " (ii. 23. 15) Modes are best understood as modifications of substance -> accidents or qualities of substances.
