Regulates interactions between the citizen and the state. A crime is threat against the community as a whole. We must live in a set of conditions by which we feel safe and secure. The only area where the government is allowed to punish people. Must send a message to the perpetrator that they"re behaviour is not acceptable. In canada, we no longer regulate criminal law using common law. If you are going to impose punishments, it is important for people to have a clear idea what"s illegal and what"s not. Criminal law is a government power - it is made by federal gov. Provinces can attach punishments to areas of interest if they have to. When there is a conflict, the federal government always takes paramount. All the rules regarding criminal investigation, how criminal rules are laid, and how criminal trials are conducted. Person suspected of committing the crime is the accused.
