Aristotle: delight in imitations is not delight in things that are imitated. For plato, artists seemed badly irrational: artist prefer copies over realities. Work of art is an entity, artifact, it is not the appearance of an appearance. To raise one thing to have the effect of another thing. Artist brings the form to the matter. Plato: form is a pure idea, descends down to matter, art copies these things. Aristotle: forms become materialized in nature: same thing happens in art. Tragedy: plot is life and soul of the tragedy: plot is the form that unifies all the matters of the tragedy. Plot provides wholeness and unity: well-constructed plot cannot begin. Form is essence because it makes the tragedy beautiful. Classical form requires proportion, forces, symmetry: beauty is a quality of the combination of these things. Cannot change the least part without ruining it. Plato and aristotle agree on nature of beauty: disagree on nature and value of mimetic art.
