Document Summary

Philos 1a03 - mar 30 - hume: criticism of metaphysics. Proofs of divine existence: ontological argument, cosmological argument - presupposes that every change in nature has a cause, argument from design (teleological argument) - hume: the religious hypothesis. nature is a divine artifact, a divine purpose. The chapter is framed as a conversation between himself and a friend. Bigotry ensues when people believe that their religion is true and others are not. The philosophy of plato, aristotle and the stoics began the idea that one religion can be metaphysically true. Conversation: defending epicurus against the hatred he gets from religious people (how could a good man believe such wrong things?) It is actually an attack of the design/teleological argument for god. Everywhere we look find evidence of order, as though everything has been designed. Cannot get this kind of order: intelligent design. Infer the existence of a designer: god. The design argument reasons backwards from effects to probable causes.
