PHILOS 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Res Extensa, Mental Substance, Agnosticism
Document Summary
Senses without reason would make us like animals. Descarte has a long-standing opinion that there is a god. He doesn"t claim to know this is true; he just has this idea. He believes there is a tiny thing that all theists should agree on, regardless of religion. Even for an agnostic or atheist, the idea of god is that of a perfect being (i. e. being agnostic is doubting the idea of a perfect being) Either the idea is true, or it is not so no perfect being exists. The cause of the universe is either perfect or not. The idea of god is omnipotent (all-powerful) Whether god is real or not, we still return to the same doubts. If god doesn"t exist- reason is doubtful. New revelation-> knowledge does not begin with sense or reason; it begins with self- knowledge. Not even god could falsely make you think you exist. If you think you exist, you do.
