Philos 1a03 - feb 2/2016 - plato"s republic (book6 ) We don"t know for sure how accurate plato"s depiction of socrates is. Regardless, it is important to understand this idea of socrates, because it so strongly influenced the history of philosophy. In the republic, plato is using socrates as his mouthpiece (socrates had previously refrained from theorizing yet here he does, implying that these are really plato"s ideas) The sun stands to visible things as visible things stand to sight. The idea of the good stands to intelligible things as intelligible things stand to understanding. Knowing the idea of good makes us the best that a human being could be; essential for philosophy. Philosophical knowledge is not opinion or belief; it is scientific knowledge. Plato hates it: philosophers should be kings/kings should be philosophers because they have knowledge instead of opinion, opinion is not necessarily false, but opinion is like a blind man who finds the right road accidentally.
