Early movements for peace: state driven (grassroots and non-governmental) Historic understanding of peace were heavily influenced by religious teachings. With the reality of violence in the world, people began to question whether war could ever be justified: three general trends: pacifists, realists. For the majority of people, war a natural part of life. War has changed in terms of who is involved, who is impacted, weapons and the types of destruction etc. War has a very significant cost to society. The level of destruction of war (biological/nuclear/chemical weapons) The shift towards the global village or better known as globalization". Economic/social/political/familial times makes people look at war differently. The increase in political involvement in the masses: the majority of people in the past wouldn"t know where to start when it came to accessing information on governmental organizations etc. (not just activism, but involvement in politics etc. )
