Ps 1a03 is an introduction to the discipline of peace research, focusing on the concepts of peace, war, security, conflict, violence and nonviolence, and examining the roles of values and ideologies in the attainment of peace. This course will trace developments in theories of peace, war and violence since the 5th century, with a particular emphasis on the 20th century. The first part of the course addresses varieties of peace and warfare in specific historical and geographical contexts, including 5th century rome, Caribbean, 17th century europe, 18th century scotland, the antebellum. The second part of the course covers the 20th century, with a focus on international governance and humanitarian organizations. The better angels of our nature: why violence has. Session 1: introduction: europeans fighting dirty: property and empire, slavery and structural violence. Session 2: just war: religion, reformation and the internal other, otherness and empire.
