22 million children under the age of 5 are overweight; there could be a double cohort of cvd. Module 2: childhood obesity: obesity is now an epidemic the number of overweight people rivals the number of underweight people. Definitions between 2009-2011, 1/3 of children aged 2-17 are overweight/obese obese children aged 10-13 have an 80% chance of becoming obese adults. Cdc growth charts: at or above the 95th percentile for bmi for their gender and age is considered obese in us. Who charts for use with canadian children: overweight is assessed as bmi above 85th percentile in 5-19 year olds; and obese assessed as bmi at or above 97th percentile, and severe obesity above 99. 9th percentile. International factors: globalization of markets; development; media programs and advertising. Community/locality: public transport, public safety, healthcare, sanitation, manufactured/imported food, agriculture/gardens/local markets. National/regional: transport, urbanization, health, social security, media and culture, education, food and nutrition.
