NURSING 2LA2 Lecture 2: Inflammation—Module
Document Summary
Inflammatory conditions: meningitis, appendicitis, bursitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, endocarditis, dermatitis (cid:862)itis(cid:863) suffi(cid:454)= i(cid:374)fla(cid:373)(cid:373)atio(cid:374) Includes the epithelial layer of the skin and mucous membranes lining the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and respiratory tracts. Are called natural (cid:862)ph(cid:455)si(cid:272)al(cid:863) (cid:271)a(cid:396)(cid:396)ie(cid:396)s: can include mechanical and chemical types. Mechanical ridding the body of pathogens including: sloughing, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, urinating and cilial action of the respiratory tract; low skin temp. discourages bacterial growth. Third line of defense acquired, specific and adaptive ability. Over time, our immune system develops specific antibodies designed to target specific antigens and this defense mechanism has memory: upon first exposure to an antigen, our immune system makes antibodies targeted toward that antigen. Involves complement factors while in immunity, it involves formation and action of antibodies: cellular cell-derived process in inflammation, the involved cells are neutrophils and macrophages and in the immune response, we talk about lymphocytes.
