NURSING 1J02 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Infection Control, Urinary Catheterization, Hand Washing
Document Summary
Pathogens are capable of causing an infection, but presence doesn"t mean that an infection will begin. The development of an infection occurs in a cycle that depends on the presence of: Week 8: infection control: an infectious agent (pathogen, a reservoir (source for pathogen growth, a mode of exit, a mode of transmission, a portal of entry to a host, a susceptible host. An infection will develop if this chain remains intact. Microorganisms on the skin are called resident or transient flora which survive & multiply on skin without causing harm & aren"t easily removed by hand washing. The potential for microorganisms to cause disease depends on the following factors: Ability to enter and survive in the host. Place where a pathogen can survive but may or may not multiply. Most common reservoir is the human body. When a pathogen is present in/on the body but doesn"t cause harm, pathogen is colonizing the site.
