Growth and development depend on a sequence of endocrine, genetic, constitutional, environment, and nutritional influences. Is the result of complex interactions between biological and environmental influences. These changes have certain predictable characteristics: they proceed from simple to complex, general to specific, from head to toe (cephalocaudal), and from the trunk to the extremities. Critical periods exist in which the presence or absence of particular experiences makes a biological system functional or non-functional. After birth, children grow according to their genetic blueprint and gain skills in an orderly manner, but at each individual"s own pace.
