MUSIC 2MT3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Vibraphone, Schizophrenia, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Document Summary
Mirroring: let the client know that whatever they do is accepted, it is them to support them. Matching: client improves in a certain style, or tempo, loudness. Therapist improvises on the same level, same dynamics, not to copy but to adjust their music to fit the tone. Not sent out to add structure or aesthetic appeal to the client, the objective is not to show them up but to match their level and make them feel comfortable. Reflecting: therapist tries to emulate the same mood as the client is projecting (their attitude, their playing style) take in the energy, and play that. Grounding: if the client starts out obnoxious and chaotic, the therapist may help to ground them, especially if they have issues with being more grounded in everyday-life. The therapist introduces structure and an anchor to the music, to encourage the client to follow their lead.
