All cultures in the world engage in music. Combination of music and medicine is not new, historically has been around. Music has become a commodity and divided from medicine, but we are now recognizing again how music is a part of a human being and processing memory, relationships, affects overall health. We take vocalizations into mt sessions since 500 bc. Young boy with cancer had little control over environment (taken away at very young age: in hospital no control over tests happening to him, or even just being there very traumatic. Initially, mt was distracting him from the pain + providing sense of normalcy. Started expressing head-banging behaviour b/c of built up frustration. Got an mt at home once he was released from hospital. He didn"t have the tools to manage no answers: on piano, b/c he was visually impaired, he was able w/touch + sound hear where the keys were. New goal help him express frustration without inflicting pain.
