What is medical music therapy? the use of music by an accredited mt in a medical setting to achieve healthcare goals. Within subject experiments: same person doing both experimental condition and control condition: disadv: practice effect when you repeatedly do a test and become better at it. Between subjects: two diff people, one does the experimental condition and one does the control condition: even though randomly sampled, if didn"t match them for other baseline measures, can"t determine if confounding variables affect results. Quantitative vs. qualitative quantitative numbers, objective, measurements qualitative - subjective. Mt as an intervention or pain perception (2003) the hospital environment reduces sense of self: noisy equipment, no control of what is done to you, other patients around you, hectic environment, can be very stressful. Improved qol can lead to a decrease in pain perception. Pain is a sensory and emotional experience nociception = measurement of physiological pain, not subjective feeling of pain = subjective.
