Lecture 4 - oct 2 (post midterm 1) Changes in technology have impacted music and opened spaces for other types of music. Popularity of black appeal radio with white teenagers leads to an increase in (cid:873)crossover hits(cid:874) 3 national music charts - pop, black, hillbilly. Certain songs would begin to climb one chart (usually r&b or c&w) and then would cross over to climb another chart (usually to pop) The way they used to do the national charts - would call up a record store and ask them what they"re selling a lot of that week. Crossover happened when white teens started going into local (white) record store and buying. (cid:874)moral panic(cid:874) - serious social issue was being exposed so we look for an easy, superficial way to (cid:873)solve(cid:874) this issue . Major record labels respond with (cid:873)white(cid:874) versions of (cid:873)black(cid:874) song.
