Themes of greed, lust, jealousy, crime, murder become more popular. In 1930s characters were 2d either bad or good whereas in 1940s characters are flawed, not black and white characteristics. Although colour films existed, most were shot in black and white. Black and white deals with shadows, play with contrast- films are shot at night because you can play with light and shadow.
