Charles ives (1874 [danbury, connecticut] - 1954 [ny] age 79) The unanswered question father was bandleader in army in civil war; taught charlie unconventional music - odd tunings, bitonal singing. Exposed to many music styles: church, folk, classical, band etc. Early in uence hearing simultaneous bands at same time in danbury (including father"s band) Studied music at yale - where he wrote church music and 1st symphony. Had successful day job as insurance salesman in ny, organist in danbury and elsewhere (music was sideline; he just loved insurance) composed in spare time, stopped in 1918 cause of health got famous near end of his life. Charles ives prize for young composers (still going today) His uncompromising artistic vision: music shouldn"t be beautiful cause it"s easy to listen to - if you cause pain to listener than that"s beauty, monotony"s unacceptable - that"s why he chose the exciting position of insurance salesman. Early 20c ex. (1908) of leaving the box completely.
