Over 40 years of age (ages keep getting younger) May or may not have any symptoms; r/t complication. Needed for survival (limited endogeneous needs exogeneous) Type of insulin - depends on insulin delivery system. Inhaled insulin not yet commercially available. Mimic endogenous (your own) insulin secretion; basal and bolus. Basal = background" insulin that addresses hepatic glucose production. Bolus = secreted in response to energy intake and glucose (take with food). Stomach acid breaks down insulin so it must be taken with food. Used to bebasal (cloudy) and bolus (clear). Bolus insulin - taken with food to cover insulin excursion. Rapid acting - works very quickly, you can take it after you"ve eaten.
