Document Summary

When the arterial blood supply is compromised (due to narrowing which can lead to angina), cardiovascular and cerebrovascular functioning becomes impaired. Narrowing in the brain can be associated with stroke or transient ischemic attack. Heart, brain and other organs are deprived of oxygen and nutrients. Cerebrovascular accident coronary artery disease atherosclerosis - presence of plaque within arterial walls. Plaque: accumulation of fatty, fibrous material that narrows arteries, increases. Migration of immune cells (monocytes, t-lymphocytes) to site of injury (tunica intima) Loosening of tight junctions between endothelial cells (now permeable to ldl) Inflammation of endothelial cells allow the ldl to enter the tunica intima (oxidized) Monocytes differentiate into macrophages once inside the intima. Macrophages, nitrous oxide and lipoxygenase oxidize ldl. Macrophages engulf the oxidized ldl thinking its a bacteria, the macrophages get larger and start rupturing spilling out the ldl causing more inflammation and damage. Lysosomes can"t do shiz when macrophages engulf ldl.
