Document Summary
The whole point of doing research is to answer a question that has never been answered before, at some point, you may want to tell others what you have learned, scholarly research is typically published in a journal. What is the literature: collection of all scholarly writings on a topic. Journal articles, books, dissertations, conference proceedings: typically limited to work that has been peer-reviewed, constantly evolving. What is peer- review: sort the good from the bad. Journal articles gets reviewed by other researchers who are experts in the field: reviewers usually do research on the same or very similar topics. Why is peer-review so good: standardizes research, makes sure that research is verified by another researcher, credibility, correct errors. But, is peer-reviewed actually the best way: existing network of experts judging people; doesn"t work if you don"t fit in, biases built in, slows the process down. Sometimes you need a little something more than a list of references.
