Thousands of fiberoptic endoscopic procedures are performed each year. Risks of sedation: patient"s don"t react well to sedation sometimes (ie. bleeding) Physicians may not be able to access certain portions of the bowel (ie tortuous bowel, stricture) Kidneys, allergic reaction, interstitial injection, or an infection at the site. Example of virtual endoscopy looking at the colon. Able to process endoluminal views of pretty much every luminal structure in the patient"s body. Able to navigate without the invasive nature of a fiberoptic exam. Nothing passed into patient"s body except for colonography. 3d image is a copy or virtual environment that represents the scanned anatomy. Produces endoluminal surface views - similar to actual endoscopy with the ability to navigate through structures without the invasive procedural nature of conventional endoscopy.
